R21-million needed to save more than 8000 Wits University students

The Student Representative Council for the Wits University is reported to have made an appeal to the civil society to help them in raising R21-million.

The funds are aimed at assisting more than 8000 students so that they are able to continue with their studies in the 2021 academic year.Thousands of students are reported to be unable to pay for what they owe their learning institutions.

The Student Representative Council is reported to have highlighted that their members are at the risk of getting expelled as they are not able to pay for their tuition fees.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been named as one of the factors that has made the students to struggle to raise their tuition fees. The student board is reported to have highlighted that the students are facing difficulties.

The student council revealed that the students have to register by Friday the 19th of February 2021.However , the problem is that they will not be able to register as they can't afford the registration fee.

A media address is reported to have been conducted by the Student Representative Council on Wednesday night at the Braamfontein campus on Wednesday night.

The Wits University's Student Representative Council is reported to have threatened that they will embark on a demonstrations if the students are not allowed to register for the 2021 academic year.

Sinqobile Nxumalo , who is the Secretary General of the Wits University's Student Representative Council made a revelation that many students can't register at the University.

Sinqobile is reported to have highlighted that as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the students ' ability to pay registration fees at the University has suffered a heavy blow. Sinqobile went on and added that the number of struggling students increased significantly.

It was revealed that in most years, the number of students that struggle financially is usually around 2000 , but in 1021 , the situation is different as there are 8 142 students who have are struggling to register.

Sinqobile highlighted that the 8 142 students are at risk of getting excluded from the 2021 academic year as they can't register .

The Student Representative Council is reported to have highlighted that most of the times they are involved in many initiatives such as social parties.However , their initiatives they use to raise funds can't be used as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mpendulo Mfeka , who is the President of the Wits University's Student Representative Council is reported to have said that their fight for inclusion in the Higher Education is not only for the students, but the poor members of the society as well.

It is then that he said that their council has taken it into their hands to try and raise the R21-million which will assist the 8142 students who are at the risk of exclusion from the 2021 academic year.

It is not going to be easy for the Student Representative Council to singlehandedly raise the R21-million for the more than 8000 university students.

It is then that the Student Representatives Council made a call to the civil society to help with the raising of the funds .The students ' body added that the funds are not about the students, but the poor families out there who have nowhere to turn to.
