2023 NSFAS demands were rejected by these students

The Student Representative Council for Wits University reportedly rejected the proposed qualification criteria for financial support that was issued by NSFAS for the year 2023. The Council argued that the initiative was aimed at benefiting the richer than the poor .

NSFAS was slammed as well for its decision to reduce the accommodation allowances for all the students from year 2023.The Wits University SRC highlighted that the decision would lead to accommodation challenges for the students.

Another talking point was the requirement of a 75 % pass rate in order to qualify for assistance from NSFAS.This was also rejected by the SRC and other student bodies. The new standard set may motivate the beneficiaries to work harder , but it may lead to a reduction in the number of beneficiaries. The 75 % pass rate can be a challenge to achieve as a result of some challenges that already affecting students, which in turn affect their performance.
