2022 school calendar is out now. Schools will return much earlier in January unlike other years.

The department of basic education is wasting no time in getting things ready for next year. Following countless interruptions to the 2020 and 2021 academic years the department of basic education has brought the return date to a much earlier date than previous years.

The country experienced three waves of the coronavirus infections and there is now talk of the fourth wave. Should things change next year the department will have no choice but to make adjustments to the school calendar as has been the case 2020 and 2021.

The vaccination of the country's population is going well and this could help easy the pressure on the education system. Children have been attending schools on a rotational basis. This system has resulted in the trimming of the curriculum which will definitely cause problems in the future.

Education experts have warned the basic education department about the learning losses that may never be closed or recovered. The department is in a tight spot at the moment. I believe they are doing their best given the time we are in.

The department has to balance saving lives and the academic year. So far the academic years of 2020 and 2021 have been saved but at a huge cost and with massive sacrifices from hard working educators.

The return date for schools in 2022 will be January the 10th for educators and 12th for learners. Normally the reopening date is set for mid January, but the department is taking no chances and is trying to clawback some of the lost time by starting early.

The class of 2021 is busy finishing their preparatory examination across all nine provinces. Some provinces will conclude their examination on the 23rd of September.

The department of basic education has had to move the final examination of the year 2021 to an early date. The examination was meant to start on the 1st of November, but that date has been moved forward to 27th of October. This leaves a short time for feedback and preparation of final examination.

Given the unpredictability of the coronavirus pandemic, I wish the department the best of luck.
