Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande has warned of an increase in the number of bogus schools selling phony honours and doctoral degrees. Nzimande expressed alarm about the growing number of incidents of fraudulent colleges bestowing honorary doctorates on celebrities.
This comes after entrepreneur and reality television celebrity Shauwn 'Mamkhize' Mkhize was awarded a doctorate in philosophy by the unregistered Good Shepherd College of Religion, Culture, and Training. Ishmael Mnisi, the department's spokesman, said that an inquiry into these illicit actions will be begun.
"Please take notice that the Good Shepherd College of Religion and Training is not recognized as a private higher education institution with the Department. We are presently conducting an investigation," Mnisi said. The institution lacks a website and an education domain. Prior to the start of the new academic year, the Higher Education government recommended the public to do an online search of an institute's registration qualifications before applying or paying any fees.
