'There is no such thing as a 30 percent pass rate| says the Basic Education Department.

According to the Basic Education Department, there is a misunderstanding between a pass mark and a pass rate.

It states that there is no such thing as a 30% pass rate.

The department was reacting to a public outcry over the so-called 30% pass mark for matric students.

"There is no such thing as a 30 percent pass rate," said Elijah Mhlanga, a spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education.


There are many things that need to be explained here, and the first is that people confuse what is called a pass mark with a pass rate, so the pass rate is something else that is the aggregate result of learners in the country, as announced by the minister this year, the pass rate of 2021 is the following, and that is what we are talking about, and that is a separate issue altogether."
