There were tensions on Friday morning at Theresapark Primary School in Pretoria as parents of Afrikaans speaking learners claimed that there was marginalization of their kids in the school. The parents claimed that the children were being told to leave the learning institution .However ,the spokesperson in the Gauteng Education Department Mr Steve Mabona was invited to highlight what was taking place at the school on Newzroom Afrika .
When he was asked to highlight why the parents were marching , Mr Mabona said that the parents were claiming that their children were being taught in storerooms .He also said that they claimed that they were threatened to leave the school because of their language .Mr Mabona however assured that there would be no child that would be discriminated from any learning institution because of language .He went on and said that the grape vine that they had was inaccurate regarding the stance of the department .Mr Mabona went on and said that the number of learners who were being taught Afrikaans was too low .It was revealed that as a result , the learners were being taught in places deemed fit by the school , hence not doing that because of their language .He went on and said that it was not the only school in which some rooms were repurposed . It is clear that there is misunderstanding between the parents as well as the school in regard to how learning is conducted .
The school needs to have a proper meeting with parents in order to educate them on how the process of learning is conducted at the school . Parents also need to have a positive mindset and be prepared to understand why certain arrangements are in place at the school . This can be handled in a proper way when there is a meeting between parents and the relevant stakeholders .
