Higher education minister Blade Nzimande has expressed alarm over an increase in the number of incidents of fraudulent universities conferring honorary doctorates, primarily to celebrities. This comes after Shauwn Mkhize, a businesswoman and reality TV celebrity, received a PhD in philosophy from the unregistered Good Shepherd College of Religion, Culture, and Training. In October, Limpopo Mayor Basani Shibambu was chastised for awarding an honorary degree to a local comedian with dwarfism for his "good contribution and impact in the society" during a primary school celebration.
Nzimande urged members of the public to be cautious and to reject such credentials. He also stated that an investigation was being conducted. "I have already requested that the Council of Higher Education (CHE) examine and advise on appropriate action on all reported examples of fake honorary degrees," he stated. In preparation for the 2022 academic year, the minister also advised potential students to confirm the legitimacy of any program or course provided by schools before enrolling in order to prevent falling victim to unlawful activities. He directed them to the registries of private higher education institutions and private colleges, which may be accessed on the website of the Department of Higher Education and Training.
The Royal AM president rushed to Instagram to express her happiness to her fans. Images from the meal, as well as photos of her in the red gown, were circulated. I have no words to explain how grateful I am for this PhD. I never thought that my work would one day have such a large impact on so many people's lives. Thank you very much for your complimentary remarks about the institution. This is one of the most meaningful differences in my life, and I will cherish it for the rest of my life. Every day, I pray that I will be deserving of this honor for the rest of my life. "I am quite humbled," the message said.
