The department of basic education in Limpopo has been closing small schools and merging them with bigger schools. The school is considered small if as a high school, it has less 200 learners.
The idea was noble and welcomed by communities especially because such small schools usually underperformed. But for a school to be merged promises had to be made.
The Department usually promises transport for learners from their homes to the other school and back. The promise of transport helped get parents on board with the move.
The parents of learners in Vaalkop outside Polokwane in Limpopo were left confused and disappointed after the department withdrew the promised transport to their children.
On Tuesday parents resorted to blockading roads with burning tyres trying to get the attention of the department. Their children have to walk long distances to school.
The policy to merge schools places more responsibility on the government to ensure no interruptions on the education of the learners.
