The re-introduction of the SRD Covid-19 special grants by President Cyril Ramaphosa from September 2021 to March 2022, was met with positive remarks from South Africans.
But the grants this time comes with a lot of terms and conditions that applicants need to meet to be able to qualify for the grant and one of that reasons is being considered as a debtor.
The meaning of having your status regarded as debtor means Auditor General's found that you have another source of income, and SASSA previously paid you when you didn't qualify, and you are expected to pay the grant back as cited in section 10.1 of Ministerial Directions which reads as follows:
10(1) SASSA may recover all monies paid to any person in the event that such a person irregularly benefitted or was not entitled to benefit from the Social Relief of Distress Grant.
