The government is thinking of extending the R350 SRD grant for the unemployed beyond 31 March 2023. This would be in place while the Department of Social Development is working on a plan to roll-out the basic income grant (BIG). The department contemplates that it could be able to roll-out the BIG in the next two to three years.
The DDG, for comprehensive social security, Brenda Sibeko said they were currently quantifying the Basic Income Grant. A lot of technical work on the BIG has been done. Sibeko said while they were working on the implementation of the BIG, the government would have to cushion those who are unemployed by extending the R350 unemployment grant until there is a new law in place to provide social security to those who were receiving the R350 unemployment grant.
If is anything to go by, the department sees the introduction of the basic income grant by 2025
