SABC News editor-in-chief Phathiswa Magopeni leveled the allegations against SABC board chairperson Bongumusa Makhathini and Group CEO Madoda Mxakwe last year. She accuses them of trying to sneak in favorable coverage of ANC and pressure from Fikile Mbalula.
She reported the matter to the board that senior ANC members were harassing a journalist for reporting news that doesn't make ANC look good. However, she was told to comply with the party's demands. Magopeni also made a submission to the Electoral Commission of South Africa saying ANC was trying to bribe journalists.
In December SABC establish a committee to investigate the allegations, instead, they charge her with insubordination and breach of trust. Magopeni went through a disciplinary hearing related to the erroneous airing of an interdicted Special Assignments episode.
The SABC Group chief executive wrote to Magopeni, informing her that she had been made redundant on Friday. It remains to be seen if she will challenge the dismissal but the case highlights the long point of contention where politicians are trying to interfere with the media and other social stakeholders to get a favorable public image.
