Costly mistake: Gauteng looses R6 million

Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, Gauteng MEC for finance and e-government has revealed that Gauteng provincial government has lost more than R6 million after processing payment in dollars instead of rands.

The provincial government erroneously paid $20m instead of R20m to Microsoft in Ireland. Said Adriana Randall, DA Gauteng shadow MEC for finance and e-government.

The lost millions could have been used to buy the much needed covid-19 vaccine.

The provincial treasury erroneously proceeded an amount of $20, 913 793.81 instead of R20, 913 793.81. The amount was recalled resulting in a shortfall of R6, 843 737.90 because of the exchange rate.

The DA in Gauteng has called for stronger action to be taken behind the official behind the payment. They believe the official should be suspended immediately and the lost money be recouped from the official. "Consequence Management is the only way in which errors like these will not happen, and will send a strong message to any government official involved in negligence seen at e-government department." Said Randall

Nkomo-Ralehoko says the provincial treasury has instituted an investigation.
