Firstly, you have to define the term “successful” in your own terms.

How much money can you make from being an author?

Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on a single book sale while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties. First-time authors who want to traditionally publish can get an advance, which is usually $10,000 (154,12 South African rand)  (usually not that much more for a first-timer).

How much money does a successful author make?

Writers and authors earned a median annual salary of $61,240 (943,86 South African rand) in 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the low end, writers and authors earned a 25th percentile salary of $43,130 (664,74 South African rand), meaning 75 percent earned more than this amount. The 75th percentile salary is $83,500 (1 286,94 South African rand), meaning 25 percent earn more.

Is it hard to be a successful author?

As in any field so in becoming a successful author, one needs to have a skill for writing, knowledge in the required field, lots of targeted, intelligent hard work. Assuming a great book is written and produced, by you in every way, half the work is done. Next half is how well you can market and distribute it.
