Highway cigarette heist was foiled when a suspect shot himself while trying to flee.

A cigarette heist was nearly executed in Port Elizabeth when it was foiled and the suspect saw his escape being foiled thanks to the quick response of the police and several law enforcement agencies.

A high-speed chase between law enforcements and the suspect in Sherwood led by Kabega Park station commander Col Tony Nomdoe, who received in tell from a traffic officer after 2 truck drivers who stopped to change a faulty tyre near Baywest were robbed of several cartons of cigarettes.

The suspects pounced on the truck drivers while they were busy trying to change the tire, in an effort to flee, while jumping over a wall when he accidentally shot himself.

A 9mm pistol was found in the yard. The suspect was apprehended. The police urge members of the public to give information about persons who are suspected of selling illicit cigarettes. The lockdown has seen illicit cigarettes syndicates get rich off of dealing in illegal duty-free cigarettes.
