Regardless the government’s assurances that the prohibition of liquor will be lifted on Level 3 lockdown, police officers continue to handcuff umqombothi (traditional beer) producers and consumers as the clock counts down to June.

It is vivid enough that these producers have maximumised their profits since authorised beer outlets were prohibited from selling liquor.

But the fat lady is about to sing, as alcohol probation falls way. Police officers together with SANDF continue the race to crack down home brewers, illicit traders and impatient consumers.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Xolani Fihla says the officer saw a man with a 1litre of Umqombothi (alcohol beer). They then interviewed him.

”He was interviewed and told the officer where he bought it. He then led the officers to the room in Joubert Park. A man was found with 20 litres of umqombothi,” Fihla said.

It is understood he further stated that the man gave them another room 303 where a woman found with thee 20 litres of the traditional beer.
