COGTA Minister sheds light on the 1.5 million mass burial story making rounds in the media
COGTA Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has denied that government is preparing for mass burials which will accommodate 1.5 million deaths. South Africa is now in the middle of the Corona virus storm which has seen a sharp increase of new cases of infections reaching thousands on a daily basis.
It was predicted earlier by government and health experts that the winter months were going to pose a serious challenge to the capacity of the health sector with big numbers of cases of new infections. That time has arrived. The past few days and weeks has seen huge numbers of new cases of infections. Just on Wednesday the number new cases was at about 9000. Gauteng has now regained its spot as the epicenter of Covid-19. Such an alarming rate of new cases of infection has sparked rumours especially on social media about a plan on mass burials on a seriously large scale .
Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku is alleged to have said that government is preparing for the worst with plans of mass burials which will accommodate over a million burials. Masuku upon visiting a Pretoria cemetery to check on issues of preparedness in the midst of the spike of infections and deaths mentioned that government is preparing for the worst and planning for mass burials which will accommodate 1.5 million deaths. “We are preparing over 1.5 million grave sites and it’s an uncomfortable discussion. As a medical practitioner, It becomes.. not something of my great topics but it’s the reality we need to do here. We need to be prepared, MEC Bandile Masuku said. Masuku’s comment coincides with the province’s return to its previous position of being the epicenter of the virus.
COGTA Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has denied that government is preparing for mass burials in the tune of 1.5 million. “The government’s response to Covid-19 is informed by the imperative to prevent infections and save lives. We are NOT, therefore expecting and preparing for one million Covid related deaths in the country”, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma explained on social media. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the Economic Freedom Fighters has accused NDZ of not telling the truth. Ndlozi urged Minister Dlamini-Zuma not to mislead the nation. “Ndlozi said it was always the government’s plan to prepare for burials but what is new is that the State is preparing for over a million burials”.
