If you are interested in getting into the construction or mining industry, you need to be equipped with the right skills and qualifications to help you thrive. In this article we are going to give you an overview on how you can become a safety officer and how to get started.
What is a safety officer?
As the term entails, it's someone that has been appointed to keep track of the health and safety protocols that must be adhered to in the working environment. They are responsible for making sure that workers are provided with a conducive workplace and are protected from harms way.
Responsibilities and duties
The job comes with a lot of responsibilities and pressure that requires you to be calm at all times in order to make the right decisions. We have named a couple of those duties below:
— Ensuring that there is compliance with the standards that have been set by the Department of Health.
— Developing and improving safety plans using clear guidelines for the industry in subject. For example, in the mining industry - making sure that everyone is wearing the right equipment and protective gear.
— Investigating workplace accidents that might take place and coming up with solutions to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
— identifying if there's any occupational health and safety (OHS) training that needs to be undertaken.
How to get started
In order for one to be marked as a viable candidate for the job, he/she needs to be in possession of a Safety officer qualification that can be provided by various institutions across the country. They must also be registered with the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) should they decide that they want to get into the construction industry.
— Enquire with a nearby college about their offerings in this field (I'm sure they have a couple of courses for safety managers).
— The great thing about all of this is that the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides funding and allowances for such courses (one less thing to worry about)
