Richard Maponya better known as Dr Richard Maponya was born in Thlabine 24 December 1920. As a teacher at the age of 24, he became a stock taker at a clothing market and won himself a promotion. His manager sold him off cuts of clothing that he resold in Soweto as he wanted to start up a clothing retail store from the capital that he acquired. But was blocked by the governments denial to grant him a license.

In the early 1950's he and his wife Marina the cousin of Nelson Mandela employed a fleet of boys on bicycles to deliver milk which was named the Dube Hygienic Dairy.

As South African business man who has contributed a lot in the development of Soweto. Richard built the Maponya Mall in 2007, in Klipsruit Soweto. R650m spent to build and it officially opened in September 2007.

The mall services all the needs of shoppers – fashion, food, entertainment, banking, hair and beauty, electronics, eyewear and more. It also offers convenient service centres such as Home Affairs, labour, transport, a post office, Sassa and many others.The 72 000sqm mall was built as a first class mall for the people of Soweto or rather Gauteng as a whole, with retail stores from worldwide and local, the mall captivates all levels of personalities and interests.

He his networth of R400m was left as he passed away from old age on 6 January 2020 at the age of 99.
