Limpopo mines presents their preparedness plan to re-open amid coronavirus

Limpopo Premier meets Mining Houses

Limpopo Premier Chupu Mathabatha led a virtual meeting of Government delegates and Mining houses operating in Limpopo in Polokwane this morning. 

The government delegation comprised of MECs Thabo Mokone (Economic Development, Environment and Tourism), Namane Masemola (Public Work and Infrastructure Development), Phophi Ramathuba (Health) and Seaparo Sekoati (Provincial Treasury. 

The Mining houses which availed themselves for this virtual meeting were led by Mr Roger Baxter (Mineral Council South Africa) comprising of the leadership of mining houses operating in Limpopo (Anglo American, De Beers, Exxaro, Ivanplats, Foskor, Samancor) and the Department of Mineral and Energy.

The meeting discussed the mines preparedness to re-open in line with Regulations under Section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 and their support for the Limpopo Socio-Economy Recovery Plan during theCOVID-19.

The mine industry presented the progress on the implementation of the standard operating procedures (SOP) that guides the industry re-opening in line with the stipulations that can be summarised as follows:

Appropriate measure to protect the health and safety of workers must be implemented (Issued by Department of Mineral and Energy;

A rigorous screening and testing programme must be implemented as employees return to work;

Mining industries must provide quarantine facilities for those who have tested for COVID-19;

Data for Screening and testing must be submitted to government authorities; and

Mining companies must provide transport to the RSA employees who will be returning to work.

The Provincial government says mines have showed progresss in the developement of quarantine facilities based on the regional clIsaster approach, where mining houses that are in the same geographical proximity can share the resources, in particular the testing and quarantine. 

The Provincial Government also said on a statement that it is impressed with regards to meeting of the need to collaborate with government so that that there could be a sharing of resources with the public sector.

A consensus was reached on the establishment of the Task Team, which from the Provincial Government side will be led by MEC Thabo Mokone whilst Mr Roger Baxter will lead and convene the mining industry representatives who will be part of the Provincial Task Team. Among other things, the Task Team will focus on the following issues that deals with the short-term (combating the COVID-19) and medium to long-term to discuss the resuscitation of the economy through the Limpopo Socio-Economy Recovery Plan:

The mining industry posture within the Limpopo Socio-Economy Recovery Plan;

The role of the mining Houses in supporting the Provincial Foodbank;

The usage of the proportion (one third) of the mining’s Social Labour Plan for the COVID-19 mitigation activities;

The role to be played by the mining house on the Province health’s worse-case-scenario preparedness plan;

Collaborate on the opening of schools;

How to use the mining procurement and social responsibility investment plans to resuscitate and transform the economy.
