The first casino in SA, Mmabatho Sun, was gutted by fire last night. Built in 1979 by the Bophuthatswana government and leased to Sun International of Sol Kerzner, it was called the Oasis in the desert. Although fire engines are barely three kms away, eyewitnesses say emergency services did not arrive for more than an hourA deputy minister didn't see any emergency services when she fled from the hotel, residents can be heard over cellphone video footage desperately enquiring about the fire services.
Bophuthatswana government had some interesting approach to economic development. It built all the retail malls and gambling dens (Tlhabane, Morula, Taung and Mmabatho), assuming most of the risk, Sun international was only a long-term lessee.
More interesting is that the government owned 49% of Sun International Bop, which arrangement some people would call classic socialization of capital. Throughout it's 40 years of existence, the casino industry employed thousands of rural youth in the homeland
Trevor Manuel decided to divest government out of the partnership and closed all except Morula Sun and Sun City. Morula closed recently and it's license transfered to the new casino at Menlyn, Mmabatho Sun will rise from the ashes after the insurer has paid because Mafikeng needs it desperately
Since the factions of ANC started looting, burning of hotels and other thing's are continuing without anyone been arrested. Sadly it boils down to political battles and factions. Mr Maape was sworn as Premier only yesterday today a hotel and hospital is high in flames the little we have at Bokone Bophirima, and the biggest question is How can the whole hotel burn down to bubbles when fire brigades- station its 3km away from it?
They are also burning hospitals, there's a new premier who needs money to steal hence the destruction. It's quite disappointing to see hotels and hospitals being burned out, people are loosing jobs and the president will be the one to be blamed
