Ford Mustang Retains Crown For Best-Selling Sports Car In The World

Although a new generation of Ford Mustang is currently in development, the current model is not quite ready to retire. According to an analysis by the carmaker based on registration data from S&P Global Mobility, the model with internal designation S-550 was the best-selling sports vehicle in the entire world last year.

We don't have specific figures, but it appears that Ford is factoring sales of the Mustang Mach-E into the equation, giving the Mustang family a significant advantage over its nearest competitors. In 2021, the United States accounted for 76 percent of all Mustang sales, according to the manufacturer. New Zealand, with a 54.3 percent increase in demand, Brazil, with a 37.3 percent increase, and South Korea, with a 16.6 percent increase in demand, were the markets with the highest increases in demand for the Mustang.

"When Mustang aficionados all across the world get behind the wheel, they unlock that sensation of freedom and enjoy the open road," said Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue. "That emotion, along with classic design, incredible powertrains, and a dedicated global community, has helped Mustang become the best-selling car in the world for the seventh year in a straight."

The Mustang has been the best-selling sports vehicle in the world for the past seven years, but 2022 may be a tougher year for the pony car. The Mustang's sales in the United States plummeted 19 percent in the first three months of the year, but Ford's vehicle nevertheless won the title of best-selling muscle car in the country with 13,986 sales. With 11,124 sales, the Dodge Challenger came in second, followed by the Chevrolet Camaro with 6,710 sales.

Meanwhile, work on the next-generation combustion-powered Mustang continues, and a leaked photograph of the vehicle's front end design was released just yesterday. Although the 2024 Mustang is still in the early stages of development, it has already been established that it will be powered by a V8 engine. According to a recent source, it may only be available with an automatic transmission.
