As the current-generation Ford Ranger nears the end of its production cycle, special editions are pouring in thick and fast. The Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition is the most recent model to hit the market.
The edition is set to be released later this year, but vehicle information specialist Duoporta has revealed a local price of R956 300, representing an R45 000 premium over the regular Raptor.
But what distinguishes the new Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition?
The vehicle has numerous interior and exterior upgrades, as well as some new equipment, and you can tell it apart most easily by the twin matte black racing stripes with red edging on the bonnet, roof, lower body sides, rear wings, and tailgate.
The front recovery hooks are also painted red, while the wheel arches, front and rear bumpers, door handles, and Ford-embossed grille are matte black.
Customers can select one of four exterior colors: sea grey, frozen white, blue lightning, or agate black.
However, this edition is more than just a couple of decals and a splash of paint, as Ford has also installed the black sports hoop normally found on the Wildtrak.
On a more practical note, the Ranger Thunder's lockable Mountain Top black roller shutter is included to keep goods safely stowed.
Red stitching on the steering wheel, instrument panel, and door cards, as well as a Special Edition-only raceway grey instrument panel, distinguish the cabin.
Ford hasn't made any mechanical changes, so you'll find the same 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine that produces 157kW and 500Nm under the hood. It is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system.
The edition, like the regular Ford Ranger Raptor models, features an impressive suspension system that includes aluminum double wishbones in the front and a multilink rear architecture combined with specially developed FOX shock absorbers with Position Sensitive Damping.
This gives it the best ride quality in the bakkie segment, as well as the ability to tackle difficult terrain at relatively high speeds.
The Ford Ranger Raptor Special Edition comes with a six-year/90,000-kilometer service plan and a four-year/120,000-kilometer warranty.
