According to data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), the new vehicle market fell in December 2021, capping a year of challenges that included additional Covid-19 waves and variants, as well as several domestic socioeconomic issues.
In December 2020, aggregate new car sales of 35 948 units were down 3.5 percent or 1,302 units from the previous year. However, new passenger vehicle sales of 24,949 units increased marginally, by 1.7 percent or 408 units, when compared to December 2020.
The following were the top five manufacturers for the month:
Toyota sold 9,580 units.
Volkswagen produced 5,131 units.
Hyundai produced 2,892 units.
Nissan sold 2,417 units.
Ford – 2,181 vehicles
SUVs and crossover vehicles remain popular among South African motorists, accounting for 13 of the top 30 vehicle brands sold in December 2021. In 2021, a number of crossovers were introduced into the local market, gaining almost immediate traction due to their competitive pricing and fuel economy.
Looking ahead to 2022, Naamsa stated that while the new vehicle market has seen significant growth since the initial shock of the Covid outbreak, it has not been sufficient to return to pre–Covid–19 levels in 2021. It stated that sustained higher domestic economic growth rates are required to support higher domestic new vehicle sales volumes.
However, with a moderate 1.8% GDP growth rate forecast for 2022, the new vehicle market is expected to continue its gradual recovery during the year, albeit at a slower pace, with a year–on–year improvement of around 8% in aggregate new vehicle sales volumes projected for 2022.
