The Fiat 500 Hydrofoil requires no driving license and appears to be a mutant minicar for the water.

Because humans are so inventive, there are a plethora of incredibly appealing motorized contraptions available.

Most of them remain just that, pretty things to look at, but we wouldn't mind if some of them made it into the real world every now and then. On that list is the Floating Motors La Foil.

Floating Motors is the talk of the day in waterborne vehicular design, as some of you may already know, thanks to an exciting series of boats styled after a number of iconic European cars. The company is the brainchild of Lazzarini Design, a company that has been creating insane contraptions for the seas for years.

We've already given you a sneak peek at the company, and last week we talked a little about the La Dolce, a classic outboard motor boat modeled after a Fiat 500. The design of the La Foil was inspired by the same Italian minicar, but this time we're not talking about a regular boat.

A hydrofoil is a more efficient way of making boats by allowing them to lift off the surface of the water to gain speed.

This is accomplished through the use of wing-like elements installed beneath the boat, which, once the machine reaches a certain speed, become the only point of contact with water, greatly increasing the boat's capabilities.

According to Floating Motors, the La Foil's design allows for a 50% reduction in drag when compared to a standard, planning boat.

Unfortunately, no hard numbers are provided, but for comparison, the classic-design La Dolce equipped with a Torqeedo electric motor capable of 20 hp can reach speeds of 25 knots (29 mph/47 kph).

The La Foil is also powered by an electric motor, though we're not told what brand it is this time. We do know that it is significantly more powerful than the one in La Dolce, with a rating of 70 hp.

The hydrofoil, like the other Fiat 500 boat, can carry four people. The overall length is 3.5 meters (12 feet), the width is 2.6 meters (8 feet), and the draft is 500 mm (20 inches). The boat's dry weight is 850 kg (1,800 lbs)
