Kia says it wants to enter the global bakkie market.

Hyundai has been making moves to establish itself in the global bakkie market for some time now.

Kia appears to be interested in doing the same, but the Hyundai Group subsidiary claims it is a difficult process.

Design boss Karim Habib told Autocar at the unveiling of its latest concept, "I'd welcome it with open arms." "It would be consistent with our portfolio and brand." There is a lot of brand loyalty in the pickup market in the United States. However, new opportunities are emerging. So perhaps there's room for another brand."

Of course, the Kia K2500 and K2700 are already available, but they are strictly commercial vehicles. The lifestyle bakkie segment has grown in popularity over the last decade, so converting its current large SUV products into a double-cab bakkie would appear to be a natural progression. This is comparable to how Hyundai adapted its Tucson platform for the Santa Cruz.

Rumours about Kia's upcoming double-cab bakkie have circulated for the past two years, with many claiming that the project has already been approved by higher-ups. The latest round of rumors surrounding this product, however, indicates that the final product will not be available as soon as we had hoped.

According to a previous statement, Kia's rumored upcoming double-cab bakkie has not been shelved; however, production timings have shifted as part of a concerted effort to keep limited information secret. According to Kia Australia COO Damien Meredith, an initial arrival date of 2022 is "not going to happen."

"We would hope that something happens with LCV in the next couple of years for our brand, not just in Australia, but globally."

"The good news is that if it does happen, I believe we'll have a lot of ownership over it because we're a big market."

"But, unless they're hiding something from us, 2022 isn't going to happen."

End...
