In the first war crimes prosecution that resulted from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a Ukrainian court on Monday, May 23, sentenced a Russian soldier to life in prison for the death of an unarmed civilian.

A Russian soldier accused of killing a Ukrainian citizen has pleaded guilty in the first war crimes trial since the conflict began. Vadim Shishimarin, 21, appeared in court in Kyiv on Wednesday, accused of shooting a Ukrainian man in the head through an open car window on February 28, four days after Moscow invaded Ukraine.

As a court in Kyiv heard the second hearing in the first war crimes trial stemming from Russia's February 24 invasion, a 21-year-old Russian soldier requested a Ukrainian widow to forgive him for killing her husband. On Wednesday, Vadim Shishimarin, a tank commander, pled guilty to killing Oleksandr Shelipov, a 62-year-old civilian, in the north-east Ukrainian hamlet of Chupakhivka on February 28.
