Caster Semenya's name was once again in the spotlight yesterday, following US transgender athlete Lia Thomas' participation in this week's National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) championships in Atlanta, Georgia. Thomas is the first transgender swimmer to win an NCAA championship, according to reports.
Lia Thomas the person who was born as a man but now competing with women as a transgender is making news around the world. This comes after Lia Thomas won the 500 yard freestyle this week and brought a huge outcry from across the world. Thomas was born in 1998 as a boy and grew up as a boy, but in his later years he realised that he was actually a transgender in 2018.
An elite female track and field athlete Caster Semenya who naturally produce above-normal amounts of testosterone, received disheartening news from the IOC in her career as an athlete. Caster Semenya was put under scrutiny and harassment under sports regulations to prove her womanhood and take meds to lower her testosterone levels to be allowed to compete.
As it stands Middle-distance runner Caster Semenya will need to take hormone-lowering agents, or have surgery, if she wishes to continue her career in her chosen athletic events.
