Correctional services officer embarrassing behaviour finally caught

The Department of Correctional Services in Durban has said one its officials and one private citizen were arrested and are behind bars. The pair were caught attempting to smuggle drugs and other illegal goods into a Durban Correctional Centre located in Westville on Saturday the 15th of January. The Spokesperson of the Department Singabakho Nxumalo has said to the media, a vehicle with two occupants was stopped by patrolling officials at 01:00 on Saturday morning while trying to enter the Westville facility.

On Tuesday, 11 January, a fight broke out at the Mthatha Prison in the Eastern Cape, resulting in the death of one inmate and the injury of another prisoner and a warden. The altercation was captured on video and then circulated on social media platforms. An inmate was killed, a Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officer and another inmate charged in an altercation at Mtata Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday Seriously injured.
