Employee earned R6.8 million without even a contract

Heads are rolling after it emerged that a Finance Officer earned R6.8 million without even an employment contract. The details surfaced after an audit revealed that an employee who did not have an employment contract got s large salary. This led to an internal investigation. This is according to a preliminary finding by the office of the Auditor-General (AG) that is contained in a letter sent to the chairperson of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) last month.

Instead, it awarded a bad contract worth R182 million. When the department hired Tau Pele and Maximus Earthworks t/a Phezulu Plant in December, it gave them an advance payment of about R104 million and R78 million, which was enough to start work on the project.

SASSA was allocated R26 billion for the Covid19 social relief grant. Due to the insufficient system, SASSA was unable to pick up some undeserving applications and made duplicate payments to other beneficiaries. It turns out that, some people who were not distressed received the grant. The Auditor General found that 67 770 social relief grants had been paid irregularly, but after a further verification of data, SASSA found the correct number to be 31 955.
